PURPOSE OF THIS PAGE
This page is provided as a free service for responsible people who are presently taking care of a pet, but need to find a new home for it. Classified Ads page has been created in response to requests from people who are caring for a companion animal that they have found, but whose owner they have not been able to trace. Many people prefer to foster a found pet for awhile and try to find a good home for it themselves rather than relinquish it directly to a shelter, where its fate is uncertain. The Classified Ads page may also be used by others who have a pet they must find a new home for. Giving up a companion animal that has bonded with you and trusts you is not something to do lightly, but sometimes it may be truly necessary. PET FBI hopes to make it easier for you to keep your pet long enough to find a qualified home for it, by sparing you the expense of a long-running newspaper ad.

DANGER !  FREE TO GOOD HOMES
Classified Ads page is to make people aware of the danger of handing over a hapless animal to some total stranger who happens to answer a classified ad. The phrase "free to good home," so common in classified ads, suggests that animals are a worthless commodity. There is widespread abuse and exploitation of animals collected from well-meaning but unsuspecting people through "free to good home" ads. They are commonly sold to labs, used to bait dog fights, sacrificed in cult rituals, and for numerous other cruel purposes that most people who care about animals cannot even imagine. To help filter out "bunchers," that is, people who collect animals only to exploit them, we are requesting that you agree to the Conditions outlined below, which are designed to screen the people who answer your ad.

CONDITIONS
To place an ad on this page or to respond to one, you must agree to the following conditions:

  • The person who adopts the pet must show a picture ID
and utility bills for the last three months to verify their current address.
  • As a reference, the adopter should bring veterinary records for another animal he or she has owned or............
  • The potential adopter should have a credit slip from any vet in the amount of at least $25 as sort of a good faith down payment on future veterinary care: immunizations, worming, spaying and neutering, etc.
  • The adopter must give his or her word to have the pet spayed or neutered, unless the animal is already neutered, and agree to be contacted by a volunteer as a follow-up. Therefore the adopter must also be willing to give a verifiable phone number and home address.
  • The person wanting to adopt the pet must make out a personal check (in the same name as the ID he or she presented) as a donation to any local animal shelter or agency of their choice, (which may include the PET FBI). This tax-deductible donation can be for as little as $5 . The purpose of the donation by check is to create a record that will discourage people from adopting multiple animals through ads placed by private individuals. The checks should be sent to the PET FBI which will keep a record of the names and forward the check to the appropriate agency.
These procedures are intended to filter out or identify "bunchers" the people who collect animals only to exploit them.
